Direct sunlight in a shop window
A high-brightness LED panel beats a consumer TV behind glass at midday. If the board faces the street through untinted glass, buy the hardware — or put the TV a metre back, out of the direct beam.
Very long viewing distances
Across a large airport hall or a wide banking floor, seven-segment LED digits stay legible further away than a 43-inch TV. Indoors at counter range, the TV wins on cost with no readability penalty.
Nowhere to get a network signal
A software board needs the internet at least occasionally. It keeps showing the last rates it loaded if the connection drops, but a site with no connectivity at all is an offline-hardware job.
