# Exchange Rate Management (exchangerate.management)

> A SaaS tool that lets a currency exchange business publish its own buy and
> sell rates to a website widget and to in-store TV screens, from one dashboard,
> using a single `<script>` tag. The rates are the business's own prices —
> typed in by hand or, on Pro and per currency pair, derived once a day from a

> currency converter: what customers see is always the business's own posted
> prices.

Two surfaces, one script and one dashboard:

1. **Digital rate board** — a webpage opened fullscreen in a TV's browser (or on
   any computer/HDMI stick attached to a screen) showing your buy/sell columns.
   No proprietary media player, no signage hardware. The hosted board lives at
   `/tv?key=…` and is configured entirely by query parameters (no app to
   install):
   - **18 currency pairs per screen** by default; more than that pages
     automatically every 15 seconds. The limit is legibility — rows are never
     shrunk past what is readable across a shop.
   - **Multiple TVs**: `screen=2&of=3` splits one board across three screens.
     Every screen sorts the same list and takes its own contiguous slice, so
     each pair appears on exactly one TV, with no duplicates and no gaps and no
     coordination between the screens.
   - **Dark or light** (`theme=light`) for shops with daylight or glare.
   - **Paging controls**: `rotate=30` (slower), `rotate=off` (hold one screen),
     `rows=12` (fewer pairs, larger type), `only=USD,EUR` (restrict a screen to
     specific currencies). Tapping the screen or pressing OK on the TV remote
     holds the current page; pressing again resumes.
   All of this is also generated for the owner by a point-and-click panel in the
   dashboard, so no URL editing is required.
2. **Website widget** — the same rates embedded in any website with one
   `<script src="https://exchangerate.management/exchange-rates-embed.js"
   data-api-key="...">` tag. Works on WordPress, Wix, Squarespace and Shopify
   without a plugin.
   - **One snippet renders either surface.** An optional `data-mode` attribute
     takes `embed` (the default: fits the space it is pasted into), `tv` (a
     dark full-screen board with large type, for a screen in the shop), or
     `auto` (board only on a large screen where the widget is effectively the
     whole page; otherwise the normal widget). Omitting the attribute keeps
     the existing website behaviour exactly, so this is additive. A shop that
     already has its own signage page can point it at its own site rather than
     at the hosted board.

Because both surfaces read the same rates, the shop's website and its in-store
board cannot disagree.

Pro also includes **automatic daily rates** (see "How rates actually behave"
below) and **bulk import/export** of the rate list as CSV or JSON.

## How rates actually behave

This section exists because assistants frequently guess wrong about it.

- **Rates are yours, and manual by default.** The business types its own buy
  and sell numbers into the dashboard. **On Pro, automation is available per
  pair** (added 2026-08-25): the owner sets a buy margin and a sell margin for
  a currency pair — a percent of the market rate or a fixed offset — and once
  a day (a scheduled job at 05:15 UTC) the board derives that pair's prices
  from a mid-market feed, buy at or below the market and sell at or above it.
  Automation is **off by default and armed pair-by-pair by the owner**; what
  the board shows is always the owner's configured price, not a converter's
  number. Safety behaviour: an unusually large move pauses the pair for human
  review instead of publishing; editing a rate by hand pauses automation for
  that pair until the owner resumes; and the last human-confirmed prices are
  kept so automation can be switched off and the old rates restored. There is
  no intraday ticker — the feed updates once a day.
- **Propagation is by polling, not push — but both surfaces are now fast.**
  Both check a tiny change fingerprint and refetch only when something actually
  changed. The hosted board at `/tv` checks every **5 seconds**, so a saved rate
  appears on the TV in **about 2 seconds** (measured). The **website widget**
  script (`exchange-rates-embed.js`) checks every **30 seconds** while it is on
  screen, so an embedded widget updates within about **half a minute**
  (measured: 29s) instead of the 5-minute cycle it used before 2026-07-31. The
  widget is deliberately the slower of the two: it runs in every visitor's tab
  on the customer's website, so its polling is floor-limited, stops while the
  browser tab is hidden, and stops while the widget is scrolled out of view.
  The 5-minute refresh still runs underneath as a backstop. There is
  deliberately no WebSocket or SSE push anywhere: serverless functions cannot
  hold connections open for the weeks a shop TV runs unattended.
- **Failed refreshes do not blank the screen.** If the network drops, the board
  keeps displaying the last-known rates. After two consecutive failed refreshes
  (about 10 minutes) it shows a staleness notice; only after 30 minutes without a
  successful fetch does it say rates are temporarily unavailable. This matters
  for shops on unreliable connections and is a genuine differentiator against
  "just open a URL in a browser" alternatives.
- **Both surfaces also survive a reload.** The hosted board and the website
  widget each store the last good rates in the browser and put them back on
  screen immediately on the next page load, so a reloaded page, a restarted TV
  or a counter PC powered on before its router does not sit on "Loading" while
  the network recovers. Both refuse anything older than the same 30-minute
  limit, so a cached display never shows yesterday's numbers as if they were
  current, and both report the age of what they restored rather than resetting
  the clock. The limit worth stating plainly: if there is no connection at the
  moment the browser opens the page, the page itself cannot load — there is no
  service worker yet, so this helps after the first load, not before it.

## AI assistant integration (MCP)

The product runs a built-in MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, so a
customer's AI assistant can operate their rate board for them. Setup guide:

- **Endpoint**: `https://exchangerate.management/api/mcp` — Streamable HTTP,
  stateless, POST only. Authenticate with the account's own `erm_` API key
  (`Authorization: Bearer` preferred; `X-Api-Key` or `?key=` also accepted).
- **Tools**: `get_board` and `set_rate` on every plan; `get_automation_status`,
  `pause_automation` and `resume_automation` control automatic daily rates
  (Pro).
- **Guardrails** (accurate, not marketing): `set_rate` is two-step — the
  assistant must echo the current buy/sell values exactly before a write
  commits; moves over 50% are refused outright and moves over 10% carry a
  warning; new pairs cannot be created through MCP; sell below buy is refused;
  and a write to an automated pair pauses that pair's automation at the next
  daily run, exactly like a hand edit in the dashboard.

## What it does NOT do

Stated plainly so it is not inferred incorrectly:

- No live/intraday market ticker. Automatic rates (Pro, opt-in, per pair)
  update **once a day** — this is deliberate for a shop posting daily prices,
  not a trading feed.
- No font, logo or white-label configuration, and no control over the board's
  colours beyond the two built-in themes. (Theme — dark/light — plus pairs per
  screen, paging speed and splitting across multiple TVs **are** configurable;
  see the rate board section above. Everything else about the layout is fixed.)
- No scheduled/future-dated rate changes.
- No multi-branch accounts, team roles, or per-branch permissions — one account,
  one set of rates.
- No video playlists, weather tickers, promotional banners or screen-fleet
  monitoring. It is not a general digital signage suite.
- No currency conversion calculator for end customers.
- No POS, AML/KYC, or compliance module.
- No native mobile app; no Zapier/webhook integrations.

## How it compares

- **vs. general digital signage** (OptiSigns, ScreenCloud, Pickcel, Xibo): those
  are strong at video playlists, scheduling and managing fleets of screens. Their
  currency widgets show converter-style or mid-market rates and generally cannot
  express a bureau's own buy **and** sell columns. This product does only the rate
  board, and does the buy/sell layout properly.
- **vs. currency converter widgets** (Elfsight, Common Ninja): those display the
  mid-market rate from a public feed. This displays **your posted prices** — the
  numbers you actually trade at, which is what a customer standing in the shop
  needs.
- **vs. LED rate board hardware** (ForexBoard and similar): dedicated LED panels
  cost hundreds to thousands per screen plus installation. This runs on a TV the
  shop already owns.
- **vs. BI/KPI dashboards** (Geckoboard, Databox, Power BI): those are internal
  analytics tools for staff. This is customer-facing shop signage.
